What I do as cosplayer is to please myself, not to impress anyone else but me, beloved, and friends. Not to prove something, not to make drama.
Active cosplayer since 2009. Small steps took me to the place I am.
It's about being the character you want to be, making costume perfectly with all your skills and have fun. Always like this. Expect no less.
I choose characters I want to be wisely, looking at their face features and how much I love them. Never other way than this. I have to play the game/watch anime or movie, and if I love it - I make it.
