This costume is definitely one of my favourites ever. There was so much work to do! I learned a lot!
The idea for this costume was inspired by my friend Flare, who first watched Kill la Kill when it was released. As anyone in my cosplay family (Edge Cosplay) usually do when we become fans of a new fandom, we cast other group members as characters, without knowing if it's ever going to actually become a serious cosplay plan. And so one day I received a message from Flare, with a picture of Nonon's character art and no caption. When I asked him what that was about, he told me she would be a good character for me, from this new show (and proceeded to show me other of his matches between characters and Edge members). I didn't know anything about this girl yet, but I already loved her design and my curiosity was piqued. So I indeed watched Kill la Kill, and began planning my Nonon cosplay shortly after ;) I have to say though, if I were to make another Kill la Kill cosplay, it'd definitely be Mako <3
It was a weird experience to build this costume as I was far from home (Seattle / Montreal), because it meant I had to bring it back with me on the plane / in my luggage once everything was completed. First of all, I had to dye the pale blue fabric myself because I couldn't find the proper colour in store. Truly the dye job ended being nice, but I didn't have quite enough pale blue fabric in the end, so I couldn't cover the boots (and one of the sleeves is patchwork, but at least it doesn't show too much on pictures ;) ). The hat in particular was a challenge! It's built out of foam, fabric, model magic, cheap kitchen sponge, worbla, paint, and feathers! I think I had never used as many materials for a single prop before! The wand is similarly made out of foam, masking tape, rope, worbla, paint and tassel. I had to really plan the dress construction carefully, as it was unlike anything I'd ever made before. I'm really happy about the way it turned out.
Unfortunately, this costume met a sad and early end as my top hat got lost by the moving company when we finally moved from Montreal to Seattle. Not only do I think I wouldn't have the motivation to make it again from scratch, but it would be impossible to get the proper shade of blue if I were to dye the same white fabric again. But I definitely want to make a few more of Nonon's outfits, so...
In 2014, I got to wear this costume to be part of Con Turnabout, a group of panelists / actors / cosplayers who make plays out of original trials set in the Ace Attorney universe, with crossovers from other series:
