Mewtwo was the first fictional character that ever held a special place in my heart. He's such a fascinating character, and his backstory is so tragic. Plus, he's a giant purple psychic kitty, what's not to love?
For this, I decided to use the manga and original game as more inspiration than the anime. This is my first ginjinka, and it was really fun to design! However, it was also hard, because Mewtwo's design is actually fairly simple compared to some other Pokemon, so I had to add some little things to make the costume pop more.
Admittedly, the piece that represents the tail isn't exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to get some pool tubing and attach it to the back of the bodice, so it would look more like I just came out of an incubator. I still might do that in the future, although I imagine it wouldn't be that comfortable to move around with, because I would have to carry it all day.
------------------------------------------
Bodice, skirt, and bolero: These are all made using the "wrong" side of casa satin. The purple accents are made of a sportswear fabric, and the bra cups were from an actual bra that I died purple. There's a large silver zipper up the back of the bodice to add a little bit more of a decorative element.
I shaped the bolero to kind of mimic Mewtwo's chestpiece. The shoulder area is slightly padded to look like his. The tube on the back of the bolero is some aquarium tubing painted silver, and then sewn into place. The large silver grommets along the tube serve no structural purpose, there's just there to look nice.
The skirt is heavily interfaced, and there's a little bit of wire sewn into the hem to give it a really sculptural shape. The "#150" is hand embroidered on.
Gloves and stockings: These are made from a thick lycra. The stockings are actually sewn right onto the little purple hotpants so I don't have to worry about them sliding around.
Masterball Garter Clips: These are made from those little plastic Christmas ornaments you can find in every craft store. The details are made with Paperclay. The purple part on the inside is painted with a translucent nail polish, which lets the LED lights inside shine through. I do wish the lights were a little bit brighter, as you can only really see them in the dark.
Headphones: These were just cheap headphones from Five Below with all of the wiring removed. The ear details are made from craftfoam with a couple good layers of ModPodge atop it for shine. The bad across the top is made from white leather, with "SILPH CO." printed across the top.
Shoes: I actually love how these came out, I'm so proud of them! They were just cheap black ankle boots from the thrift store that were painted with grey leather paint. The heels and other accents were painted silver. I added grommets to them, and attached some narrow tubing from a train hobby store. Wooden balls are attached near the ankle to mimic Mewtwo's little toe-ball thing.
Spoon: I'm obsessed with spoons. Seriously. My parents had a child lock on the silverware drawer when I was growing up because I would steal all of the spoons for my collection. So naturally, this giant spoon was a must have for me. Mewtwo fights using a spoon in the manga, which I always thought was so cool.
This was made using a wall decoration from an antique store. I cut the spoon head off and attached it to a new wooden handle.
This desperately needs a better paint job. I made this in a rush, so I didn't have time to properly sand and prime it like I should have.
Belt piece: As I mentioned above, this is something that I really want to remake. I'm actually not wild about the concept of the tail-belt, but I was pressed for time and couldn't do what I wanted to. But I'm planning to remake this piece before my next wear!
