SAILOR DESTRUCTION *in the most metal voice you can imagine*
This costume wouldn't have happened without my dearest friend Envel and I am just so happy that it actually happened and now I just want to make all the Senshi! Envel made each of us patterns tailored to our sizes so it was a lot less intimidating for a derp like me. She made my bows too and gave me all the love and supported during the construction process. <3 She even sent me the spandex for the leotard since no stores had it in my area from her personal stash. She is too good too me and I don't know what I would do without her ;_;
Since all the hard stuff was done for me fitting wise, the actual sewing was pretty straight forward. The hardest part for me was the stupid hip roll. Going to have to do that better next time! But it's a learning process. Since Saturn has special EVERYTHING it was kind of a running joke between me and Envel as I was working on it. I bought the earrings from a lovely lady on Etsy and the tiara was from Catzia. The brooch was made (hilariously) from a Christmas tree ornament that I dremelled down and threw more glitter on.
The glaive was where I spent most of my time. It's not perfect, but the overall look I think turned out nice. The blade is made from thin poplar, cut with a scroll saw and sanded. Most of the decorative bits came from precarved pieces of wood that I found at Home Depot and Lowe's. I wish I had a lathe, but alas I do not. Ideally, it was supposed to separate into 3 pieces, but because of a last minute accident, it only separated into 2.
I am really glad this costume happened because it almost didn't. On Thursday night while unpacking and getting costumes ready for Friday morning, I discovered that I had left the sailor collar for this at home (when I got home, it was right under the ironing board... ). My heart sank and I definitely had a breakdown, went out to the car and cried. I had been looking forward to this group so much since it was with the 3 people I consider my closest friends and I felt like I had let them down. I felt horrible. I didn't know what I was going to do. But then, I decided to do a search on my phone and there was a Hancock fabric within 10 minutes of the Gaylord. Aug and I got up in the morning, went to Hancock and got fabric and supplies to make myself a new (albeit with questionable construction) collar. I was able to wear this with my ladies and I am just so happy that it worked out in the end.
