Toph is a character near and dear to my heart for a lot of reasons. While I've never been head-over-heels for her costume, I loved her enough to want to try it. Mostly, it was one of those costumes I made just to see if I could make it. It was only worn once - for a photoshoot - before I sold it to a good home.
All the fabric parts were made out of a linen blend and were drafted from scratch. I referenced a traditional wrap-around gi-top for the undershirt. The apron closes with an accurate wooden toggle.
Toph's accessories - her belt, wrist and ankle pieces, and her headband - were made using suedecloth over craft foam. Details were added with fabric paint, and the studs were made using hot glue dollops.
Try as I might with many, many packs of extensions, I just couldn't get Toph's bun to work the way I wanted it to. In the end, for the sake of time, I scrapped the bun and made a little detachable bang piece that I wore with a borrowed black wig from my sister. I actually ended up really liking the effect.
Last but not least, I wore cataract eye contacts, which I love. I wish I had more excuses to wear them without looking like a zombie, but there you have it.
