WIG
I began with a Le Tigre wig from Arda wigs which I LOVE. It is beautiful and full. I began by pulling it up into a half ponytail, and braiding the bottom half. I actually made the "hair loopies" as separate pieces from hair cut from the wig, and sewed the silver tube beads through them and onto the wig, since they were too small to slide over. The bun is foam core covered in the extra hair fiber cut from the wig. The wig is stubbed and it is attached with caulk. I then unbraided the rest of the hair and curled it using the hot water/curlers method. Finally, I combed out the curls and ran my fingers through them to create waves. Katara's hair is huge and fluffy when it's down, so I did my best to add body. Tutorial to come later.
TUNIC
I based the tunic on an old yukata pattern I had drafted, modifying the neckline, no sleeves, and adjusting the length. I used "candy blue" Kona cotton, and lined the entire tunic with white broadcloth. The white design on the collar and bottom of the skirt are also Kona cotton, and I drafted them on paper before cutting them, interfaced them, sewed them onto the dress, and did satin stitching around the edges, like an applique. At first, I thought the collar could be sewn on like bias tape, or like a kimono, but the season 3 dress has too many curves, and she also has the curly design on the skirt. I decided the sleeves didn't look like actual set in sleeves, so I left them and gave them a nice rolled hem. I love this tunic! The piece around my waist is wool.
PANTS
These were a snap - I based them off my bloomer pattern, lengthening them. They are made from a nice navy blue wool - pretty warm! and have elastic at the waist and legs. They tuck into the boots. The boots are Chinese Laundry brand from Ebay.
ACCESSORIES
The betrothal necklace was made from a blue shell bead that I took from a bracelet. I painted on the design with a blue nail art pen, and then coated it with clear nail polish. Nails and shell are made of the same thing, so it totally works! The choker is just a fabric tube made from leftover scraps. The gloves are made from spandex and took me forever (I hate making gloves!) and the armwraps are actually sewn onto them. Then I wrap them around my forearms and they secure with some hidden velcro.
