I've been wanting to cosplay Katsura for a very long time! When I went to Hancock's and found discount fabrics in matching colors, I couldn't pass up the chance to finally make him!
This costume is made by me from scratch with no patterns. In traditional yukatas, the front and back is one piece of fabric, so there are no shoulder seams. Previously, I would cut my fabric so that the front and back were separate pieces. This time, I followed traditional construction techniques to make a relatively authentic yukata set in terms of cut.
Because I would be wearing this costume during the summer in Texas, I decided to keep each piece unlined, otherwise I would sweat to death. His nagajuban (inside white layer) is sleeveless and shirt length to help with the heat, and is made from white lining fabric and interfaced polyester broadcloth for the collar. The dark blue yukata is made from twill suiting with a good drape, and the light blue haori is made from a stretch suiting. His yellow obi is made from a golden brocade and is long enough to wrap around my waist twice and has ties in the back. All seams are finished with a zigzag stitch.
I noticed that his G.E.M. 1/8th figure by Megahouse had a blue ribbon wrapped around his katana. I chose to add the ribbon to my katana to make it more interesting, and made the ribbon from a blue stretch crinkle satin.
