Alongside my Kat costume, I made Alias for my partner. This turned out to be a really exciting project, as I got to use loads of new techniques and materials in making the helmet!
The base is a pepakura pattern, which just so happened to be basically fit for purpose already. For the pepakura construction, I made each segment in two layers – a cardstock layer (the outside), and a craft foam layer for reinforcement (on the inside, making it a bit more comfortable to wear. The pipes and other built out sections were made from worbla and added on. I then made my first proper excursion into the world of electronics, soldering some LED lights into a circuit for the lens on the front of the helmet. I taped down the wires so that they ran over the back of the helmet, to a battery pack and switch. I then added a final craft foam layer on the outside, concealing the wiring and allowing me to add in the final finishing touches, ready for painting!
