These costumes turned out to be amazingly fun to wear, mostly due to their obscurity. People who knew the series were delighted to see people cosplaying from it, and people who had no idea what we were from were curious enough to ask. I'm responsible for the majority of the construction on all three costumes, which made for an interesting experience of creating everything in triplicate (something I don't care to repeat). This was my first time working with a stretch material (cotton lycra in this case), my first time making hats, and my first time making shoe covers. Here's the break down from top to bottom:
Hats - I used a butterbrick witch hat pattern to get a basic idea of how things should work. I only ended up using the pattern for the cone piece, as I had to pattern out the brim due to it's distinctive shape. There is a thin piece of cardboard in-between the layers of black cotton twill and yellow cotton lycra to help the brim keep it's shape. The top cone piece has poster board inside of it. For the sake of being sure not to lose our hats, they were sewn to our wigs.
Wig - Just your run of the mill short black wig with bangs that was trimmed into the right shape.
Poncho - It's a big rectangle made of black cotton twill with yellow piping between the two layers of fabric on either side. The circle was cotton lycra ironed onto craft fuse, top stitched, and glued to the black fabric. The star is white cotton ironed onto craft fuse, top stitched, and glued onto the circle. The black symbol was painted on when the rest of the poncho was complete.
Top & Skirt - Both were patterned out by myself and made out of two layers of cotton lycra (in an attempt to avoid undergarment lines as well as being able to see through the fabric). The top has an invisible zipper to enable me to be physically able to put it on.
Gloves - I used an old Vogue pattern for these, but ended up having to edit it and drastically take all three pairs in. This is my second time making gloves, and the first time I've actually gotten it right. The wrist bits were made of white cotton with stiff interfacing between the layers.
Shoes - Are basic black patent pumps from Payless with a single pattern piece of cotton lycra. The pattern piece was made by tracing the shoe, cut along a fold, and sewn with a seam along the bottom of the shoe. The areas around the front opening and the heel were glued to the shoes. Shoe pads were added to the bottom for traction. The wings on the back of the shoes were made of stretch black vinyl with two layers of stiff interfacing in between them. They were glued to the shoes once the shoe covers were in place.
Eye & Wands - The "Eye" is on the skirt of this costume, but can't be seen due to my poncho. Both it and the wand were made by our group's Sae. She also was the one to paint the symbols on the poncho's.
