Inspiration: One of my first costumes was a ghetto Zelgadiss outfit. I made it out of clothes I already had, and bedsheets. Since then, I have moved on to other costumes, but I have always wanted to go back and actually MAKE the Zelgadiss costume the right way. Perfectly. This would be my pitiful attempt ;)
Favorite Aspect: I LOVE the material I picked out for it. It's the perfect weight, color, and doesn't seem like it will fray or anything. Oh, and the pointy ears. ^-^ The props too! *_*
Least Favorite Aspect: That I don't have a better wig. The stones wouldn't stay on, so I had to paint my face instead.
Easiest Task: The pendant gem thingy.
Hardest Task: Styling the wig, adjusting the shape of the mantle.
The wig is a ratty blue wig that was part of my Elk costume from .hack//. But I threaded yarn throughout the wig, and then cut it away enough so that all it actually did was give the hair more body. Like a wig that's all matted underneath on purpose in order to make the hair stand up? That's what I did the yarn for. Then I thinned out elmer's glue with water, and spiked the whole thing. I used a blowdryer and hairspray to stiffen it more, and finally put polyurethane spray as a sealant and to really stiffen it.
The red pendant clasp he wears is a styrofoam ball with papermache over it. The sword will be paper mache'd too, once I work out the kinks in the design.
I am experimenting with sculpey to make the stones for my face- I have yet to see if spirit gum combined with liquid latex will hold it there.
It didn't work. Need to find something lighter than sculpey :(
The sword is made of a dowel rod with foamboard for a blade. We cut a blade out of the foam board then cut out a slit down the center of it to put the dowel rod into. Because the blade got thinner towards the top though, we had to use a serrated kitchen knife to carve away the end of the dowel rod. T_T I think I killed the knife. I wish I had power tools. ;_; But anyways, then we made the crescent shapes out of more foamboard, and posterboard will be placed over all of this to give it flat and 'sharp' edges.
