My friends and I did a Ghibli heroines group and I got to be Arrietty! I was excited to use my own hair, but not excited to make that chip clip thing.
This costume was deceivingly tricky to put together as ghibli characters have a certain degree of practicality in their designs that I find don't exist other places. Everything on the costume needed to function as it realistically should, and I was adamant about that fact. I wanted everything to look like it could be used, and in the end everything could be!
The clothes pin/"chip clip" was made out of cardboard, and opened and closed along an axle with the aid of magnets to help it stay closed. The fish hook was made using a wire base, duct tape, and paper clay covering. The pin sword was actually my favorite part of the project because it was so easy to make! The bag also functioned as my bag for the day, so it held my camera, wallet, and cell phone securely! I really like utilitarian costumes :)
