My friends wanted to do a 3-person group, and the only thing we could really think of that we all liked was Avatar, so we put together Ozai's Angels! My personality is a lot more like Ty Lee, but my body type didn't quite fit that bill, so I settled in to this lovely lady.
Mai was a pretty smooth costume. the actual fabric portions weren't too bad! I had only made dresses and skirts so far, so making hakama pants seemed strange to me, but thankfully that process wasn't bad either. The most challenging portions were making the boot covers and working with wig modification. I've since learned more effective strategies for the covers but trying to make the pointed tip work on on her shoes was definitely my biggest battle. Mai's hair buns though...that was also pretty formidible D:
This costume helped me discover how important it is to make props for your costumes and how just adding a prop can really completely influence the way you pose and bond with the character. I wore it at a second convention after making her daggers and I felt so much better!
Due to the disparity between the way I can't really relate to Mai much as a character, however, I believe she is retired, but who knows!
