Because everyone should play it. Everyone.
Teamed up with Allan for this, he was the more talented 'pilot' of the tentacle suit, and I would then take up the role of spotter dressed as Bernard, but the beauty of a costume like this is you can stick on more or less anyone. This is good because after hopping around a bit while in it your legs will burn like HELL
After 3 hours of careful planning and design as we apparently managed to procure every camping mat in our entire city and couldn't find spare in case we messed up.. We eventually threw the plans in the bin and hacked at it with scissors blindly. It worked out in the end.
The innards are a flexible cone of foam covered in duct tape for strength, with holes for arms and the tongue, as well as a viewhole between the top two suckers that you can kinda see through if you're lucky.
The skin is just polycotton, the suckers are pipe insulators with polycotton sleeves sewn around them then sewn to the skin, and the backings are all funky foam. The ray gun is mix of some plastic odds and ends with foam details, when you're piloting something that'll flop around you don't want anything delicate anywhere!
The arms are some sticks covered with more pipe insulators, they kind of cross behind the back of your neck so it takes some getting used to controlling them, but they had a button on the end that made the gun light up so hurrah.
