First deployed: Con-G 2012
I love all flying things so the aerial acrobatics Wonderbolt team was an obvious choice. I pegged Spitfire to cosplay because that one had the most interesting colours and then found out was named after the most awesome WW2 fighter - so how can I resist? (To be fair I didn't realize she was a girl at first but ah well)
Originally wanted to make this a one-piece flightsuit similar to the ones in the current military or NASA astronauts but I really don't have the technical skill to pull that off so settled for a simple jacket and pants combo. The jacket felt a little barren especially at the sleeves so I added some simple epaulets with a rank insignia of major to give some character. If the Wonderbolts ever get an official seal or symbol then I'll add a patch to the shoulder sides too.
The wings, I'm quite pleased with. They are simple foam pieces painted and flexbonded for strength and wires to hold the pair together. To wear them I glued small magnets (harvested from junked laptop hard drives) to the wings and sewed a corresponding pair to the underside of the jacket. This worked out pretty well, the mags were strong enough to stay together and I could reach back to pull the wings off when needed - especially in Con-G's tight quarters >_<
Finally the goggles were made of the same foam. Decided to make my own and paint them up to match as closely as possible to the ones in the show. The comically gigantic result is a bonus XD
Improvements to be made: After seeing a bunch of photos I think the blue I used is really off >_< It's a lot lighter than I want so if I have the resources (possible) and time (very unlikely) to remake this I would like to.
Also footwear - maybe coming across something in light blue in thrift stores would be nice but not too important I think.
