The black collar was patterned, cut, trimmed with bias tape, and fit to an existing black turtleneck. The bows on the front as well as the back are reenforced with wire to retain their shape and made from a cotton bottom weight fabric. The bodice was draped on a form, then transferred to a flat pattern before cutting and sewing. The black details are bias tape sewn onto the garment and satin stitched where it was not along an edge. The collar and skirt are made of a cotton I found at a garage sale (about 7 yards of it, such a great find) and the collar was patterned and attached with a facing with the trim satin-stitched on. I'm really proud of that color, because I feel it's very true to the anime and a lot of official art, being the only grey-purple I could find that wasn't too much of one or the other.
The skirt is a simple pleated skirt with a zipper in the back and a ruffle added to the bottom. My first Homura skirt had layering, but it was always falling unevenly so I just bit the bullet and sewed the ruffle on the bottom. The shoes were inserted into leggings I patterned and put together with a serger, with a hole cut for the heel then sealed and covered in felt to keep the tights from being damaged by walking. They were then pulled over a custom form I made of my leg and painted.
The shield is made of worbla and painted with acrylic paints. I originally cut styrofoam into a circle, then added clay to make the ridge. I formed the worbla over that for a base, then molded and cut each piece of the detailing before adhering it to the shield, creating a 3D look. The circles were molded over circles of clay that I rolled, formed over, then rolled again. Great for making simple shapes in a hurry! After it was painted, I covered the entire thing with a glossy clear coat, sprayed the orbs with a glass-like finishing spray, and lastly attached an elastic band to the back
This is the new entry for my remake of my Homura cosplay, complete with shield, accurate leggings and heel height, and a new skirt that doesn't look like garbage. Homura is my precious magical lesbian angel, and it was amazing getting to do so many shoots at Katsucon 2014 this year with friends!
