Many people know my love for retro characters, especially arcade or cartoon characters. I never watched the Darkstalkers cartoon, but I did play the game, and adored it. Oldschool arcades are my happy place ;)
I always loved the myth behind succubi/incubi. I think it's fascinating, but I'm not the most curvacious person, so cosplaying a succubus was never something I considered. Then I remembered Lilith, and silently contemplated making her costume, which I knew would be a challenge. Not only would I be making a strapless bodysuit that would have to comfortably stay up by itself while featuring a large keyhole/boob window, I would have to find a way to do the wings, all the while convincing one of my sexy friends to cosplay the ultimate symbol of videogame femme fatales.... Morrigan!
Convincing my lovely Vixen to be my Morrigan was actually pretty easy. She spoils me rotten and shares my love for classic characters. But that didn't solve the wing problem. We bounced ideas off one another periodically and looked at other Lilith/Morrigan costumes, to see how other cosplayers handled the wing problem. There were some diamonds and some hunks of coal. Some people tried various materials like hoola-hoops and fabric, while others ignored the wings completely and just didn't do them... Which I considered a cop out. But nothing we saw fit my vision of the wings, till finally I discovered it through looking at pics a friend did of an unrelated costume..... RUBBER!
So here's the break down of the costume and how it was done, for my lovely fans and friends -chu-
The bodysuit was made by myself and features an inner corset made from black denim (it's actually recycled from my Madam Red costume). It is fully boned using zip ties (cheap way of doing a softer boning, if you want the corset to be more rigid, use brick strapping. NEVER BUY STEEL BONING! It's a rip off). The corset was then recovered with a jersey that was extended, cut and hemmed to go seamlessly into the thong. I did not make it a step in, since I wanted to be able to pee without removing my corset. So I just attached lingerie hooks to the back of the corset (beneath the tail of the wings, so out of sight) and the end of the thong. It attaches at my tailbone. The tights were ordered from 'we love color,' and I am wearing 2 pairs. One is a flat white underneath the blue so that the blue looks brighter. The bats were painted on using a stencil made by Vixen, with a matte fabric paint in a navy. Both Vixen and I wanted our feathers to be plush, so we used a boa rather than a fluffy feather trim. One boa was enough for both of us.
The wig is from one of my all time favorite dealers, Wig Fever. I highly encourage anyone looking for a well made, thick wig that's durable, quality and affordable, to check with them first! They're amazing. It's made of kanekalon
The boots I purchased off ebay. I wanted a flat, considering at cons you're usually in costume for 15hr days, and Lilith's boots never had much of a heel in the game. On the sprites, the boots appear to be cowboy boots, but I wanted to stay away from that because they're tacky, and I have an immense hatred towards country music and didn't want to be kidnapped and forced to line dance by the "south"...
The head wings are just layers of craft foam, pieced together then painted.
Now onto the part that everyone is waiting for.... THOSE WINGS! The wings are actually made from rubber, poured into a mould, over a wire skeleton, so they're fully posable and weight about 2 lbs. They are attached to my corset via a set of heavy duty hooks. Size is 40"x19".... so they are quite wide, but Vixen and I found that people were awesome and more than happy to open doors for us when need be :) They were painted with acrylics and then clear coated. My favorite part is that the wings are really light and flexible, so they bounce when I walk.
I still want to add more bats to the tights and there's some wear and tear on the headwings that need to be fixed before I wear this again, but I have to say that I am the most proud of this costume out of all that I have done :)
The reception in this was awesome too! So many people loved seeing the Aensland sisters, and the compliments and questions had me beaming after all the hard work. I love the cosplay community XD
