Originally completed in 2011. I have worn this costume multiple times, it's pretty much a staple along with my Ewok for day events or as a back up costume for conventions. It's great in the hot weather and I love the way it photographs, plus it's relatively comfortable.
This was not my first time working with pleather or any sort of faux leather. But it was my first time working with this particular kind. I wanted the very digital, plastic-y feel, so I went with a vinyl. It's probably the same type of material used for rain coats. I have to say it was a big pain in the butt because it was very hard to sew such a plunging neck line and not have it pucker, or sew a fold into it by mistake. I also had to make sure the collar would stand up on it's own. I did have a few issues with the vest being back heavy and pulling down, but it was fixed with a wide elastic sewn along the bottom to keep it snugly in place. Very close to the end I ran out of red vinyl, and because it's a pain in the ass to find, I knew there would be no time to buy new stuff. Hence why the bottom of the vest is black. Though it's not what I initially wanted, I think it turned out for the best and ended up looking great.
The yellow badges on the chest and collar were interfaced before being sewn on to prevent the red from showing through. I got quite a few comments on the lettering on the chest. Many people wanting to know how I did it because it was so perfect. Truth is, I was lazy and just bought scrap book stickers in an acceptable font. They worked perfectly. What you have to understand about vinyl, is that anything will stick to it. Unlike other faux leathers, stickers and things that have been glued won't peel off, so you're safe when it comes to anything with even a mild adhesive. The bustier is a simple convertible, seamless bra that I sewed lace along the top of by hand.
During the course of the con, I wore 2 different types of boots. Both syles are common in the Meiko art for this outfit, so I took the opportunity to pack both a heeled black knee high, and a brown winter boot. Luckily I had both of these in my closet because I have an ungodly amount of shoes. I think I prefer the winter boots, just because they're easier, and more comfortable to walk around in.
The wig was lovely and ended up being perfect. It was supplied by the wonderful people over at wig fever on ebay. These are the same wig makers that provided the wig for my Green Lantern.
Over all I am definitely please with this costume.
