The reason I chose to do this is because a friend of mine asked that I join his cosplay group for Aki-Con. My first choice was Kaito, but he was snatched up before I could grab him. So I chose Meiko... This was mostly due to my height. Most of the Vocaloid girls are fairly short, so I was left with the choice of either crossplay or do Meiko or Luka. As I worked on this costume I learned about Meiko and saw artwork done of her and actually grew to love her. She's now probably one of my favorites that's come out of the vocaloid fandom
This costume was kind of a break from my usual mess of complicated nuttery. True it wasn't as hard to construct as some of my more elaborate cosplays, but it did involve working with fake leather, which is never fun. The top, leg straps, wrist cuff and choker are all made out of rubbarized fake leather. It's thicker and a little more realistic than pleather, it's also a pain in the butt to sew. The skirt is not a real plaid, since I'm allergic to wool, but a synthetic alternative that was thinner, but gave the same effect. After all of this I can honestly say, I never want to iron a pleated skirt again! Leg warmers are a denim material that was bought out of a scrap bin, and the chain is a simple zinc plated, round cut from a local hardware store. The shoes were actually in my closet thankfully and worked out perfectly.
The wig was a special design, that was done specifically for this character. It was imported from Japan via Fantasy Sheep off ebay.
I have realized since I got back that the leg straps and the sock are on the wrong sides. Being as I was in the States, with no computer and a limited phone use, I couldn't look up my ref pics :C all well. I'm still pleased with this none the less...
From head to toe:
The wig was a special design, that was done specifically for this character. It was imported from Japan via Fantasy Sheep off ebay. It is made of kanekalon and still looks great to this day.
The collar is made out of red pleather, with do-it-yourself pyramid studs.
The chain was from a hardware store, you can buy it by the meter there. I forget what kind in it, I think spiral link chrome? I'm not sure.
The bodice is made out of a specialized rubber leather substitute. It's expensive but it works really well for when you want to build structured things, and it's still cheaper than actual leather.
The skirt is made out of a polyester wool blend. I am allergic to wool, so I usually have to wear stockings with this outfit. The reason I decided to ignore that and use the fabric anyway was because it was such a close match to the art work I was basing the costume on.
The red leg adornment is made out of red pleather, and the black one is made out of a spandex cotton blend.
The leg warmers are made out of gray denim with some of the same fabric I used for the skirt, made into belts to hold them in place.
They shoes are just random, magenta pumps I had in my closet.
